Another way to experience Kill Ugly Radio

September 29, 2007

I am gratified to get comments and visits related to my somewhat stalled radio project Kill Ugly Radio.
People seem to dig my Videodrome one the most.

Here’s another way to listen to them - and lots of other audio things. It’s SeeqPod. Have you heard of this?
It’s a great audio search engine. It doesn’t allow you to download anything, but I have found many cool things with it.
If you - like me - are a little burned out by downloading music obsessively - and just want a way to listen to music on the internet or just want to sample music you’ve only heard about, this is the shit.

You simply enter a search, click on the song and it starts playing it in a playlist.
Clicking on more songs queues them up in the playlist. If you sign up,
you can save and edit and share playlists.

Here’s one I did last week.

And here’s one I made this week.

But I digress.

Kill Ugly Radio Archives can be found here.
It’s not all of them, but - in my opinion - these ones are the best. You don’t really want to hear me learning how to work a mixing board, so most of my earlier ones have been omitted.

Let me know if this works for ‘yall.

Radio Activity

September 11, 2007

I just this last Friday manned a mixing console live on the air as part of The Outside World Broken Record Sale, a late-nite collage show featuring some handpicked items to be sold at the following morning’s sale, which benefits KBOO. I had the fortune of sitting in with KBOO’s most creative free-form DJs; Dr. Zomb, Jim “No Soap Radio” Larrance and our host Daniel Flessas, who acted as master of ceremonies.

Many people came and went and read from books and many, many records, CDs and tapes were played on the air, often at the same time. It was a radio engineer’s nightmare.
I had a blast. So much so -in fact - that it was scarcely dampened by the fact that my car got towed away and I ended up spending the wee morning hours liberating it.
If I ever get around to it, I will post audio highlights.

Addios Vinyl

September 1, 2007

Just last weekend I parted with nearly 90% of my vinyl collection. The only things I kept were either of a sentimental nature or things I know are kind of worth something.
There’s no doubt that vinyl has lots of depth and warmth that doesn’t translate to digital formats. I will miss my records, but they took up so much space and were always a storage problem and as I have moved over the decades, have always ended up spending an interim period in a less-than-ideal situation. They’ve been through excessive heat, cold, mildew and finally, my wife - bless her heart - unknowing of the hazards, stacked all my infrequently played records on top of each other in a closet.
I am sure the heat of the summer and combined weight rendered all towards the bottom of the stack nearly unlistenable.

Oh well.
I have donated all that I could live without to KBOO’s book and record sale next week. I have noticed that some of the weirder ones have gotten into the hands of DJs or are in production rooms. I am glad that after so many years and memories, they have gone to record heaven.
