iPod Dead at Last

February 28, 2009
The little iPod that wouldn't die

The little iPod that finally died

Yep, it finally kicked the bucket. Read about the many trials and tribulations here. I’m not an ideal Apple customer, by any means. By all rights I should’ve dutifully thrown my old iPod over my shoulder and bought a new one every time a new model came out, right? Or bought a Touch.
No. I’m a bit of a techno-Luddite in a way – and a poor one at that. As it was, I bought mine from my pal Ralph with our usual currency: El Super Burritos*. The iPod cost me 24 El Supers, which worked out to around 80 USD, circa 2006.
But it’s really dead this time. My usual resuscitation regimen of getting it to display the ’sad iPod’ icon and then unplugging it until the battery wore down didn’t work this time or even multiple attempts. Usually after that, it would come miraculously back to life as if nothing’s happened.
I’ve gotten an amazing amount of play time out of it. Like I said earlier, it not only played all night for years, but was almost always shuffling away in my considerable commute time.
Quite a bargain, I’d say.
Don’t know if I’ll buy another anytime soon. They’re pretty damn expensive for a toy and I hear the new ones aren’t very reliable. Who knows, though? Perhaps Ralph will want a new one and the promise of a steady flow of El Supers.

*The El Super Burrito is a demonically delicious and addictive offering exclusive to the taco stand Super Taco Express. It’s a caloric behemoth filled with beans, meat (get the chicken) salsa, cilantro and a big chile relleno in the center. It’s the all-day, all purpose burrito.

Prog Rock blowout

February 28, 2009

I am in the middle of a Saturday art-binge and enjoying some classic slabs and sounds of the 70’s, running through the first three Eno albums and also planning on giving this BBC show the attention it deserves.

Also, Egg City Radio has recently put up some choice Van Der Graaf Generator and Soft Machine for your perusal.

Check it out.

Now back to my Saturday ritual…

Trouser Press Tuesday:

February 24, 2009

CLOWNS FOR PROGRESS
Clowns for Progress (Flipside) 1995
The Clowns’ greasepaint gimmick might be necessary for a band with nothing else to show for itself, but the New York club punk/roots quartet has tight, electric chops, a strong, self-assured baritone singer in guitarist Deano and influential pals like Jesse Malin of DGeneration (who contributes vocals to the OK cover of the Who’s “Kids Are Alright” here). Besides confidence, what the Clowns seem to lack most is songs. “Hurt Me Baby” is a good ‘un, but overlooking the Nirvana styling of its chorus is impossible; after “Say Goodbye” and “Martian,” the best numbers here (“Lonely,” “Yeah,” the rockabilly bop of “Killing Time,” the bluesy, acoustic “Hand Rolled Cigarettes”) aren’t nearly as memorable. Despite the smiley faces and costumes, inside every Clown is just a regular guy.

Since 1974, Trouser Press has been covering the Other Music beat and currently resides on the web at www.trouserpress.com

I will be posting a random link from Trouser Press on every Tuesday until I just flat out forget (which I apparently did last week).

Show Archive page

February 20, 2009

I have created a page to list all my radio shows so far. Clicking on the titles will take you to the individual show’s page for audio and playlist, write-up, etc…

Here it is.

Some links might be inactive when you get there as I am moving things about. Feel free to comment on the show archive page comments to let me know if something’s broken.
I also haven’t put up my first ever show, because it was seven hours long and I haven’t had the time to edit it. I may just put it up in its entirety.
I really must thank pal Sauceruney for generously allowing me the space to archive all this audio!

Bachir Attar Interview

February 20, 2009

Bachir Attar of The Master Musicians of Jajouka stopped by KBOO studios for an interview on the eve of their performance at the Roseland Theater.

Bachir Attar and Daniel Flessas

On hand were host Firefly, The Outside World’s Daniel Flessas and yours truly.

Download (23 mins, 21.3 megs @ 128kbps)

Sadly, I was unable to attend due to an unavoidable work/schedule conflict the next day. I don’t think it would be good to try to make a report on my trip to management after being out tripping to Sufi music ’till 2am.

Guess I’ll have to save my scheckles for airfare to Morocco.

Previously: Joujouka Festival on the anniversary of Brian Jones’ recording of his classic album.

Headed for Seattle

February 14, 2009

I am headed to Seattle for a few days on a secret work-related mission. I don’t know if or how it will affect blogging, but I do plan on taking in a few sites as time allows. One thing I will go for sure is see Paul Allen’s Experience Music Project and will geek out big time at the Science Fiction Museum. I also have a tentative plan to go see Bachir Attar and the Master Musicians of Jajouka at Nuemo’s, a mere 8 blogs from the safe-house I’ll be in. It really depends on how well my workday goes. If I’m wiped out, I won’t feel like going too much. Who knows?

Xavier, Renegade Angel

February 14, 2009

Yep. It’s every bit as twisted as PFFR’s previous show, the late, great Wonder Showzen.

Lovers of horrid CGI and New Age bashing humor will love this, no doubt.

Last Thursday Night’s Show: Post-Mortem Cramps

February 14, 2009

“Hey I’m on my way, on a journey out of this world…”

~Lux Interior
(10.21.46 – 2.4.09)

I played lots of music from The Cramps long, illustrious career, including some rarities and well-loved vinyl treats.

I got a lot of nice calls; one from a guy who said he was in a garage full of bike mechanics who were digging the tunes and some even from people who had never heard The Cramps before and liked it.

Hermeto – Music from the Beard – Som da Barba

February 10, 2009

I once tried to smoke a macrame owl and had a hallucination that looked pretty much like this…
