Here’s a Thanksgiving blast from Kill Ugly Radio’s past. A bit dated, but aren’t you thankful that Bush isn’t president anymore?

Not quite the mix of angry political stuff and comedy that I’ve been putting together for the last few years and stuffing in the same Crass-like CD sleeve, complete with Gee Vaucher inspired artwork and distributing to like-minded partisans. I’m sick of Dubya jokes, and now that he’s a lame bird, he defies all attempts at parody. Not that he doesn’t make the appearance. Like an uncle that you wish wouldn’t stop by for Thanksgiving supper, yet does- he’s here. But don’t worry, part two is more upbeat- just in time for when the tryptophane kicks in, so does the music.

Something I found in a thrift store. It’s an LP credited to David Wilkerson Ministries. I think this is the same David Wilkerson that published the smash-hit best seller The Cross and the Switchblade (we had a school teacher that forced us to watch it one year in grade school) and known for his (typically) off mark religious predictions.

It’s a sort of pre-cursor to all of the Rapture mania that’s been going on for the last decade or so. It’s presented in a sort of Mercury Theater, War of the Worlds style, with all action being conveyed by actors playing newscasters or people being interviewed either about the mysterious disappearances of the righteous or some hideous plan by The Beast.

Although there’s no date anywhere on this LP – and certainly no Satanic Roman numerals – I’m not sure when this came out and I can’t find a shred of info on this on the web, I’m guessing sometime after 1980, based on the clothes on the people on the LP jacket’s back. Also, the fact that in the story the President of the US is one of the raptured, makes me think this is a product of the era of Ronald Reagan. It mentions that this is a soundtrack to a movie of the same name, but can find nary a mention of it anywhere on the web.

Some notes on the quality: on side one there’s some occasional distortion that sounds like clipping. It’s unfortunately on the LP. In fact, even though I’ve listened to this album more than once, while ripping it, I still found myself leaning over to nudge the fader down on my mixer down in an unconscious attempt to try to attenuate what sounds like level clipping. It’s either a poor pressing or inept mastering. Sorry!

That aside, it’s a fun LP. Almost as fun as Forrest McCollough’s Flight F-I-N-A-L, but not quite as batshit crazy (I played both LPs on the week before last’s show).

My first glimpse of Rapture eschatology was seeing a similarly-themed VHS tape that was set in a CNN-type news desk and utilized lots of stock footage of riots, war and famine to tell the story of the Second Coming of Jeebus. A real laugh riot that was forced on us by a crazy, Fundy-Xtian relative. Wish I had it now.

Tonight I played a truly random bag’o tracks. The only last minute substitution was a track by Master Musicians of Joujouka, in honor of the passing of their oldest member, Mallim Ali Abdeslam El Attar (he was 100!), after Frank Rynne contacted me this afternoon to tell me of his death. May he be at peace. Unfortunately, I had not one MMoJ CD in my crate or on my laptop and had to play something from the controversial ‘95 reissue of The Pipes of Pan.
Fun show, though. I played some really heavy electronica and some fun percussion-based songs, as well as an album I’ve been looking for for a while – John Somebody by Scott Johnson.

ZG Magazine 1981

Something I bought from the Richard Francis estate sale:

A curious little cassette from electronic music genius and New Wave impresario Morgan Fisher (he did the wonderful compilation Miniatures and the not-quite-as-wonderful Miniatures 2 a decade or so later) with composer John White and Gavin Bryars.
Here, Fisher attributes his contribution on side one to ‘The Hybrid Kids‘. His stuff is quirky and odd and is entirely composed of cover versions of other people’s songs, almost all done in a raucous, over-the-top fashion.

John White’s music on side two consists of a piece that was performed live at the Miniatures Launch Party and is much more pastoral and mellow.

This was apparently an offering with a short-run publication called ZG Magazine:

ZG Magazine was a short-lived British magazine that covered recent developments in modern art and music, and a cassette came with each issue. For their third issue they invited Morgan to provide some music and he decided to use material that had been recorded in connection with two of his recent albums. The “Play Loud” side includes demos, remixes and out-takes from “Claws”. “Play Quiet” was a fascinating collage of remixed material from “Slow Music” plus six pieces by The Nordic Reverie Trio, who had performed at the “Miniatures” launch party. The trio’s music was composed by John White (a contemporary classical composer who had made an album for Brian Eno’s Obscure Records label), who also played, and the other two members were Gavin Bryars (now world famous for his lush minimal orchestral music, and a participant in both of the “Miniatures” albums) and Dave Smith.

Gary Lucas has toured Europe with Leonard Bernstein playing his Mass and was a member of Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band in its final recording lineup (on Ice Cream for Crow, after a cameo on the previous Doc at the Radar Station). He has produced albums for eclecticist Peter Gordon and jazz saxist Tim Berne and is a mainstay of Manhattan’s downtown avant-rock scene. I’ve been wanting to mix a live Halloween show for years since programming at KBOO, but one thing or another made it not happen. But tonight, I did and had a blast. Back on the air after a two week absence. I was preparing and giving a presentation on sampling and audio collage for a digital media class at WSU, so had to let the program go for a bit.

But I’m back this week with a new show. A lot of hubbub in the air room. We just had radio personality Rick Emerson on the show prior to mine, so people were packed in like sardines. He was a really nice guy. He did a talk at WSU, despite having just been let go from Portland station KUFO (to make room for the odious Ricker from Seattle). Attempting a gothic sound comparable to mid-period Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bryan Gregory’s first post-Cramps project, the aptly titled Beast, was nothing like his old group. The Beast’s three 45s in the early-’80s were of mixed quality, and Gregory soon faded into obscurity. His three bandmates, however, moved to the UK and forged ahead as the Veil, releasing an underrated album of dark poptones like “Manikin,” “Twist” (both singles) and “Love in a Dying World” (a Beast remake). Vocalist Andrella’s wispy voice and quasi-Egyptian shtick manage to charm even when some of the material does not.(…)
