As much as I hate to do it, I need to cease doing it right away.

I will probably continue to put out a podcast of some sort, under some name, but not as frequently.

I wish to thank Jeff Simmons for the opportunity to be a part of the Radio 23 family. It was a lot of fun. Thanks also to the many amazingly talented folks who DJ on Radio 23′s Channel A, Room 111 and Cascade Community Radio, whose inventive programming always entertain and enlighten.

Kill Ugly Radio started as a live mix-tape collage project in the late 90s and later became a monthly show on KBOO community radio before being a weekly program on WSU’s KOUG Radio and finally having a home at Radio23.

Thanks to all the folks who continued to listen to the regular show for the three or more years of it’s run and up to now. Your comments and emails always made it worthwhile.

As I said, I’ll continue putting out a podcast. My record hoarding hasn’t flagged a bit. I’ll have something for you, so stay subscribed. It’ll just come a bit less frequently, like once a month.

I’ll also keep tending to the archives. The older ones will be taken offline soon and all but the ones that still garner lots of traffic will remain.

Thanks again for all you regular listeners! This isn’t the end, necessarily but hopefully the start of something fun and creative!

Honestly, doing all-vinyl shows is a daunting task, especially when three rambunctious kittens decide to occupy the studio and make creative choices centered around the hypnotically spinning zebra-striped slipmats. One rather rowdy cat Tigger decided to run straight up my back and perch on my shoulders when I was standing at the mic back-announcing. Youch!

So, with all the cat-herding and record slinging (most music from this genre/era has short songs which usually end ubruptly, prompting many Jersey transitions), I barely had time to do a proper playlist.

I Won’t Say I Love You/BW The Sheik of Araby

Low budget looking 7 inch 45 rpm I found in a christian thrift store.
I couldn’t pass it up; it had all the marks of a homemade record or at the very least a vanity recording of the type where some truck driver scraped up enough money to cut a record. Plus, it was from nearby Seaside Oregon, so my curiosity was doubly piqued.

How can I describe these recordings? On the a-side, one of the Lampien brothers (I’m assuming) croons a heartfelt love song while someone does a fair Helen Wiggins of The Shaggs impersonation, barely keeping time and switching the accent from snare to high-hat mid-song.

A-Side: I Won’t Say I Love You

On the flip, we have a swinging country song that incorporates the old standard The Sheik of Araby and while the drumming Lampien manages to keep time well enough this time around (I’m guessing the boys learned how studio playback worked by this point), the song incorporates a Donald Duck-like voice as counterpoint to the singing.
